PC virus ‘Gumblar’ explodes across the net
Never heard of the Gumblar virus? Nor have most people, but it’s rapidly becoming a major threat to PC users infecting more home computers and more websites everyday.
It works by hitting computers via vulnerabilities in some versions of Adobe’s PDF reader and Flash player software. Successful attacks will attempt to install malware that manipulates Google search result pages when viewed by Internet Explorer. Victims may see fake results that will redirect them to fraudulent sites. To spread itself further, the malware will also attempt to steal FTP logins and hijack any Web sites controlled by an infected PC.
First detected in late March, researchers thought that the attacks had been halted by mid-April when Google delisted the offending sites. However, a new variant of the attack has arisen in recent weeks and has been spreading rapidly and led to a series of warnings from senior security officials.
What should I do if I think my PC is infected?
Security firm ScanSafe recommends that people concerned about the security of their own sites should visit a third-party site called ‘Unmask Parasites’
